Allendale survey shows acreage increases

A farmer survey by a major analytical firm points to higher planted area for corn, soybeans, and wheat.

Allendale, Inc. projects U.S. corn acreage at 92.828 million acres, larger than the USDA’s Ag Outlook Forum guess of 92 million and up 2.009 million from 2020, implying an all-time high for production at 15.24 billion bushels. That’s using harvested area of 84.831 million acres and Allendale’s trend line yield of 179.7 bushels per acre.

Soybeans are pegged at a record 90.317 million acres, up from the Ag Outlook Forum estimate of 90.0 million and an increase of 7.233 million from last year, implying record production of 4.558 billion bushels when using the harvested area projection of 89.274 million acres and the trend line yield of 51.1 bushels per acre.

Planted area for all types of wheat is projected at 46.409 million acres, also up from last month’s Ag Outlook Forum of 45.0 million and 2.060 million acres above last year, with production of 1.910 billion bushels when using Allendale’s harvested area estimate of 38.702 million acres and trend line yield of 49.4 bushels per acre. By type, Allendale has winter wheat at 32.205 million acres, up 1.790 million on the year, non-durum spring wheat at 12.465 million acres, an increase of 215,000, and durum planted area at 1.740 million acres, 55,000 higher.

Allendale says old and new crop producer sales are ahead of the respective year ago paces.

The USDA’s 2021 prospective planting report is out on the 31st, along with quarterly grain stocks.
