Much colder air on the move

On the Plains, cool, dry weather prevails. Conditions are especially harsh in North Dakota and environs, where widespread sub-zero temperatures early Friday are being accompanied by snow showers.

Across the Corn Belt, very cold air is settling southward on gusty northwesterly winds. In addition, snow showers are developing downwind of the Great Lakes. Friday morning’s temperatures dipped below 0° in parts of the far upper Midwest, including the Red River Valley of the North.

In the South, a band of showers and thunderstorms stretches across the Gulf and Atlantic Coast States. Warmth lingers across the lower Southeast, including Florida, but colder air is arriving across the mid-South.

In the West, scattered rain and snow showers from the Pacific Northwest to the northern Rockies contrast with warm, dry weather in California and the Southwest. Despite dry weather in recent days, the Sierra Nevada snowpack contains an average of 47 inches of water—180 percent of average for the date.
