Mild, drier weather for now in the Midwest

Across the Corn Belt, mild, sunny weather dominates the Midwest, warming top-soils for germination and helping to alleviate excessive wetness on low-lying fields.

On the Plains, showers and thunderstorms continue from Nebraska to Texas, and severe weather is again possible, though the moisture is timely for winter wheat and germination of summer crops. Spring wheat areas on the northern Plains remain dry, fostering a rapid pace of fieldwork in areas with adequate moisture.

In the South, Flood Watches remain in effect along the Gulf Coast from southeastern Texas to the Florida Panhandle with the promise of additional, locally heavy rain. Showers will be scattered throughout the Southeast, causing local disruptions in fieldwork.

In the West, rain and snow showers continue in the central Rockies, disrupting local transportation but providing a late-season boost in the snowpack. Dry weather prevails elsewhere. A Freeze Warning was in effect Friday morning in southeastern Arizona, but warmer, sunny conditions are spurring rapid development of cotton and other crops in southwestern Arizona and California.
