Accumulating snows finally return to much of the Corn Belt

On the Plains, cold, breezy weather prevails in the wake of a departing storm. Rain showers linger across the southeastern Plains (e.g. Oklahoma), while sub-zero temperatures are affecting portions of the northern Plains, including nearly all of North Dakota.

Across the Corn Belt, snow is blanketing central and eastern areas. Some of the heaviest snow is falling in Illinois and environs, with current depths reported at 2 inches in both Des Moines, Iowa, and Chicago, Illinois. In the western Corn Belt, frigid, windy weather is causing some blowing of previously fallen snow.

In the South, showers are developing in the eastern half of the Gulf Coast region. A separate band of rain is spreading across the mid-South. The rain is slowing fieldwork but providing beneficial moisture for pastures, winter grains, and other crops.

In the West, warm, dry weather dominates California, the Great Basin, and the Desert Southwest, causing some early melting of high-elevation snowpack and keeping many rivers running high. Farther north, a plume of Pacific moisture is spreading inland across Washington, resulting in widespread rain.
