Wet conditions persist in Michigan

Corn and soybean planting continued between scattered showers last week for Michigan farmers. The USDA says less than four days were suitable for fieldwork last week and disease pressures are starting to increase with continued wet conditions.

The USDA says 82 percent of corn is planted, 43 percent is emerged and the crop’s condition is 75 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are 56 percent planted and 20 percent emerged.  Sugarbeets are 80 percent are emerged and condition is rated 77 percent good to excellent.  Farmers have 13 percent of the alfalfa crop harvested for first cutting.

The winter wheat condition dropped a point to 71 percent good to excellent, 84 percent of the crop is jointed and 27 percent is headed.

Growers report a fair to good peach crop so far this season, and a light fruit set because of poor pollination and freeze damage in pears. Asparagus harvest continues as does direct seeding of cucumbers, yellow squash and zucchinis.
