West central Illinois planting well under way

Planting is well underway in west central Illinois.

Shane Gray, who farms in Sangamon and Morgan counties, tells Brownfield they’ve been in the field since April 12th.

“As soon as things dried up, everybody’s going like crazy, sun up to sun down and nonstop.”  He says, “So, I’m kind of secretly hoping for maybe a little bit of a rain so we can take a break.”

He says field conditions have been very good, except for fields impacted by winter annual weeds.

“The ground’s working great.” He says, “Actually things are going in well. I think the only nuisance is a little bit of the henbit that has grown up.  Whether you’re spraying it or tilling it up or whatever, but it looks really pretty out in the field, a nice purple field, but it can be a pain in the rear.”

Gray says they need around two weeks of favorable weather to finish planting.
