USDA raises red meat, milk, egg production figures

The USDA has raised its 2016 red meat, egg, and milk production estimates.

Red meat production this year is expected to be 49.842 billion pounds, with a slightly bigger guess for pork, up to 25.030 billion, cancelling out a decrease for beef, down to 24.580 billion. The annual price for barrows and gilts is estimated at $46 to $49 and steers are projected at $133 to $142.

Poultry production was left unchanged at 47.510 billion pounds, with an increase in broilers to 41.025 billion and a decrease in turkeys to 5.945 billion pounds. The annual price for broilers is seen at $.85 to $.90 per pound and turkeys are pegged at $1.10 to $1.18.

Egg production was increased by 9 million dozen eggs to 8.180 billion dozen. The annual price is estimated at $1.41 to $1.50 per dozen.

Milk production was raised modestly to 211.9 billion pounds. The annual price projection is currently $15.30 to $16 per hundredweight.
