State Cattlemen’s president gives Trump Administration mixed reviews

The president of the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association is giving the Trump Administration mixed reviews.

Krist Wollum operates a feedlot and owns a stock cow herd in southwest Minnesota.

He tells Brownfield it’s difficult to say whether President Trump and his staff are pro-agriculture.

“It seems like one time you turn around you think (the administration) is ag friendly, the next time you turn around the funding for the Department of Ag…they want to cut funding from us.  So it’s still kind of a toss-up.”

Wollum says he believes Sonny Perdue is a good fit for USDA Ag Secretary.

“He’s got a good background in animal agriculture, so hopefully that will be a good thing for us.”

But Wollum points out Trump campaigned on shrinking government spending.

“He was going to try balancing budgets, and to do that you’ve got to take cuts.  And unfortunately, (agriculture) happens to be one that he’s looking at.”

Brownfield interviewed Wollum at the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Summer Beef Tour last week.
