R-CALF pushes for COOL to part of NAFTA renegotiation

R-CALF wants country of origin labeling (COOL) to be reinstated through renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.  The cattle producer organization sent a whitepaper to the White House explaining COOL’s importance and providing a plan to restore COOL as part of President Trump’s NAFTA renegotiation.

The whitepaper says NAFTA’s rule-of-origin should ensure that the origin of beef is the country or countries in which the animal is born, raised and slaughtered.  NAFTA currently says the origin of beef is the country where the animal is slaughtered.

R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard says he’s confident that given the choice, consumers will buy beef produced exclusively in the U.S.
