Only one of 11 states still considering ‘Right to Repair’

The general counsel for the Equipment Dealers Association says right-to-repair legislation is not needed.

“The vast majority of the repair information that the average farmer needs and wants is already available.”

Natalie Higgins tells Brownfield after being introduced in 11 state legislatures this year, including Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska, right-to-repair legislation only made it out of committee in New Jersey.

She says repair information that is currently restricted is generally because of safety and environmental concerns.  “These types of pieces of legislation we feel will do very little for the average farmer.  We feel they will make a much more complicated landscape for our dealers, and also by the same token—manufacturers.”

Higgins says there are also three federal pieces of legislation that include right-to-repair language, but they haven’t moved forward.
