Ohio State seeks volunteers for field trials

Culman Field Test

Ohio State University is looking for farmers to participate in its fertilizer field trials next year.

Steve Culman, a soil research specialist with OSU says the trials will monitor nutrient applications as well as phosphorus, potassium and sulfur applications and how they impact corn, soybeans and wheat.

“We want to know when farmers need to apply and when they don’t need to apply,” says Culman.

Culman tells Brownfield research will also examine soil samples before planting, leaf nutrient analysis, yields, and information on soil management. He says all information gathered will be made publicly available.

“If you’re a farmer anywhere in Ohio, you can go in and look at some of the counties that have surrounded you and see the trails that were conducted and what the responses were,” says Culman.

Farmers can choose which nutrients they’d like to work with, and will have flexibility in plot layout and application rates. Compensation will also be available.
