NFU says organic livestock regs will “ensure consistency”

The National Farmers Union says organic livestock and production standards need to be finalized by the USDA, by mid-November, as scheduled. NFU President Roger Johnson submitted comments to the director of the National Organic Program (NOP) – saying the regulations will “ensure consistency across the organic label.”

The Obama administration rules WERE finalized in January, but Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue delayed the date they were to take effect until May 19th.  He then delayed implementation until at least November 14th of this year.

Opponents of the regulations say they will have harmful, unintended consequences for consumers by way of higher prices and producers will be put out of business.

NFU says the regulations will benefit consumers and producers.

The requirements clarify, among other things, how those in the National Organic Program must treat livestock and poultry to ensure their well-being and how they are transported.
