NFU president doesn’t buy rosy ag outlook

NFU President Roger Johnson

The president of the National Farmers Union says a somewhat positive overall outlook of the ag economy fails to recognize the ongoing financial hardships many producers are enduring.

During the recently completed NFU Convention in San Diego, Roger Johnson listened to an economist who argued these aren’t bad times for agriculture.

“And when you look at aggregate numbers, a lot of folks could come to that conclusion.  I don’t quibble with that.  But I also know that there’s a lot folks who are facing significant stress.”

He says farmers who entered production agriculture within the last ten years have been hit especially hard.

“They entered the business at a very high-cost time period.  You don’t rapidly get rid of those high costs, so they’re going to be facing an awful lot of financial stress.”

Johnson says Congress must be made aware of these challenges as the new Farm Bill gets written.
