National Biodiesel Board says production is already ahead of EPA targets

biodieselThe National Biodiesel Board says the industry has already met the biodiesel targets set by EPA for 2018.

Vice President of Federal Affairs Anne Steckel tells Brownfield they’re happy to see the timeliness of EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard requirements, but EPA missed an opportunity for biodiesel.  “They set the volume at 2.1 billion gallons for 2018 and that’s only a 100 million gallon from 2017 volumes.”  She says the U.S. is projected to produce 2.5 billion gallons this year.

Steckel says biodiesel is an advanced biofuel which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent compared to conventional petroleum diesel.  “This is a real opportunity for the EPA to take some leadership.  The Administration talks a lot about how they want to reduce greenhouse emissions—this is a way they can do it.”

Steckel says if the Administration truly supported renewable fuels, they would increase the volumes for biodiesel.
