Minnesota farmers made substantial progress in the harvest of small grains last week.

USDA’s latest crop update pegs oat harvest at 57 percent complete, five days ahead of the five year average.

Forty-two percent of the spring wheat acreage has been harvested, more than a week faster than normal.

Barley harvest is three days ahead of the average pace at more than 40 percent finished.

Meanwhile, alfalfa growers were also busy cutting and baling hay across the state recently.

The second cutting is now beyond 90 percent complete, with the third cutting expected to reach the halfway point this week.
