June milk production up 1.6%

The USDA says milk production in the top 23 producing states during June was 16.655 billion pounds, up 1.6% on the year.

Production per cow averaged 1,926 pounds, 26 pounds more than a year ago and the highest for the month since the series of reports started.

The number of milk cows was also up on the year at 8.647 million head.

During the second quarter of 2016, U.S. milk production was 54.351 billion pounds, 1.2% more than second quarter 2015.
