Iowans urged to celebrate Earth Day by pumping E85

Ag-related groups are recognizing Earth Day in many different ways.  In Iowa, the state’s renewable fuels association is urging motorists to take advantage of what it calls “bargain” prices on E85 fuel.

IRFA managing director Lucy Norton says E85 is currently running about 90 cents less than E10 gasoline in Iowa.  Even factoring in a 15 percent decrease in fuel economy, Norton says E85 is a money-saving proposition.

“What that really boils down to is, if you own a flexible fuel vehicle and you’re running it on E85, you’re only playing 11 cents per mile to drive—using E85—compared to 14 cents per mile using gasoline,” Norton says.

Norton says using E85 not only saves money, it also benefits the environment and the economy.  “Obviously, using an environmentally-friendly fuel that we produce here in the state is better for the state’s economy, as well as helping to reduce harmful air pollution—and it puts people to work.”

Norton says the ethanol industry supports more than 70-thousand jobs in Iowa and boosts state tax revenues by 532 million dollars.

IRFA has teamed up with several Des Moines auto dealers on a special E85 promotion.  It will inform motorists of the value of E85 and where they can find E85 in the greater Des Moines area.
