Illinois test plots to focus on nutrient stewardship

The Illinois Farm Bureau and its companies are promoting conservation stewardship practices through a series of test plots and demonstrations. The program, called 4R4U, builds awareness of the 4R approach to nutrient stewardship. The 4R approach involves using the right source of nutrient, at the right time, at the right rate, and in the right place.

Local plot tests will compare common practices to advanced practices on nutrient stewardship. Some of the types of tests include various rates and numbers of nitrogen applications, no-till farming and cover crops. Field demonstration days are to be held next spring and summer.

Illinois Farm Bureau President Rich Guebert says demonstrations help farmers learn to maximize input utilization and focus on nutrient loss reduction strategy.
