House advances Senate GMO labeling bill

The House rules committee voted Tuesday to advance the Senate’s GMO Labeling Bill.  Yesterday’s vote sets up floor debate on the bill without amendments.

During yesterday’s debate Massachusetts Democrat Jim McGovern said adding multiple GMO labeling options avoids the point, which he says, is to put the information the packaging so people can easily see it.  McGovern offered an amendment which would have allowed the House to amend the Senate’s bill – but it failed. Earlier in the day McGovern told the American Soybean Association he expects the bill to pass.

The bill will come to the floor under a closed rule, which means no amendments and limited debate.

The vote is expected this week.
