Hot and dry conditions continue across much of Midwest

Except for a few isolated thunderstorms, it’s another hot and dry day across much of the Midwest. Many areas will again see temperatures in the 95 to 100 degree range.

On Sunday, it was 95 with a 20 mile per hour south wind on Wayne Humphreys’ farm near Columbus Junction in southeast Iowa.

“This corn that is in the V6 to V7 stage, which makes it almost knee-high, was curled up pretty good in the middle of the afternoon yesterday,” Humphreys says.

The corn is reaching a stage where the hot and dry conditions could start to impact yield potential, he says.

“If my agronomy memory serves me correctly, this is about the stage where corn starts to determine how many rows around the cob it is putting on, for a final yield. So it might be kind of a sleeper issue that the number of rows are being affected by this hot weather at the moment.”

Humphreys says they’ve gone two weeks without rain. But he says, to this point, the crop has progressed well and he describes his corn and soybean stands as “perfect”.
