Harvest wrapping up in Indiana
Corn and soybean harvest is winding down across the state. Ninety-five percent of the corn crop has been harvested – with the majority of the remaining corn is in the north central and eastern portion of the state – and soybean harvest is 96 percent complete.
Ninety-eight percent of the winter wheat acreage has been planted – just ahead of last year and the five-year average. Seventy-four percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.
Ample rainfall has helped to replenish both topsoil and subsoil moisture. Eighty-eight percent of the topsoil and 64 percent of the subsoil moisture are now called adequate to surplus.
According to the Indiana Field Office of USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service – more cover crops have been planted this year to help preserve the unused nutrients remaining in the soil due to this year’s drought.
