Growth Energy waiting for GREET model update

An official with Growth Energy says the biofuels industry needs answers soon on the modeling used to measure transportation emissions for sustainable aviation fuel.

Jake Comer, vice president of market development, says the GREET model will provide critical opportunities for U.S. farmers to contribute to the SAF market. “We’re expecting some modeling announcements here shortly from the federal government that will support the industry’s ability to make jet fuel.”

He tells Brownfield the organization is calling for updates that are both scientifically accurate and fair. “It’s a nonpartisan model that always inputs the most recent and best science, so we just are asking that they use that with no modifications, no political stipulations attached. Just use the right model.”

Comer says the fuel could be a groundbreaking market for agriculture. “It’ll be a mixture of crops going into it. Some soybeans, some corn. It’s huge. It is a game changer.”

He says the Biden administration has a goal of three billion gallons of SAF production by 2030.
