Favorable short-term weather outlook for Delta region

An atmospheric scientist says short-term weather outlooks show increased chances of precipitation across the Delta region.

Matt Makens tells Brownfield it could also bring some severe storm systems. “We could get a system that douses that region tropical wise,” he said. “But if you take that element out – let’s just assume no hurricane, no tropical storm, none of that activity occurs – we’re favorable, but mostly in the early part of this (growing) season.”

He says a drier pattern could develop later in the summer, similar to the 2023 growing season. “It’s been about four to seven weeks where we’ve seen an uptick in moisture here,” he said. “Up until that point, we had some drought issues. We had worries about Mississippi River levels being low.”

Makens says crop growers in the region have had better than expected spring moisture.
