China soybean buying group visit offers relationship building

Members of China’s largest agricultural buying group, CFNA, have been in Indiana this week learning more about the supply chain for soybeans.

Ed Ebert, with the Indiana Soybean Alliance says the exchange is an opportunity to develop relationships and expand markets and increase value for Indiana corn and soybeans.  “Certainly when you look at China’s overall impact on global trade flows of soybeans, it’s enormous,” he says.  “It’s is by far the largest importer of soybeans globally and it has been increasing at a very constant and steady rate.”

Indiana’s Department of Ag director Ted McKinney says this visit is a big deal for Indiana agriculture.  “It enhances our opportunity to sell not only commodity soybeans in this case or commodity ag products,” he says.  “But branded products.  In fact one of the items in the recently minted Indiana ag strategic plan deliberately says ‘we want to host more of these groups’.”

Indiana farmer Jim Douglas says it’s important for the buyers to be able to put a face with crop.  “To sell product we have to develop these relationships,” he says.  “They aren’t going to happen without them.  Other countries in this world want these markets also and it’s important that we have a face at this trading table.”

The group will conclude its trip in Des Moines on Thursday to sign a multi-billion purchase agreement for US soybeans.
