Chicken labels explained

The National Chicken Council is explaining commonly used terms on chicken product packages.  The council’s Tom Super tells Brownfield Ag News that’s because it found that most consumers are confused about many of those descriptions, “What does an organic label on chicken actually mean? What does a free-range chicken actually mean? What does it mean when a chicken package says ‘fresh’ or ‘enhanced’ or ‘may retain water’? So, those are just some of the things that we’re hearing and wanted to provide answers to.”

For example, if it says “Certified Organic” on the label, Super explains, “It means that the chicken has been fed only certified organic feed, so, organic feed and soybeans. The chicken is also free-range meaning that it has to have access to the outdoors. And, it has not been administered antibiotics, though it may have been vaccinated against common poultry diseases.”

Super points out that NO chicken that makes it to the store, certified organic or not, has antibiotics in it.
