ASA says farm programs are essential

The American Soybean Association says with falling crop prices farm program payments are an essential part of the federal farm safety net.

President Richard Wilkins says farmers are in the second year of falling prices and while payments have increased, they are only a Band-Aid. He says industry organizations need to redouble efforts to improve market conditions.  Wilkins says prices for soybeans, corn and wheat have dropped 40 percent in the last three years.

Early this month, USDA announced more than $7 Billion in farm program payments through the Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage 2015 programs.
