AFBF, NCBA urge approval of Gorsuch

Two major farm groups, the American Farm Bureau and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), are urging Senate approval of Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch.

Farm Bureau general counsel Ellen Steen says agriculture needs someone like Gorsuch on the Supreme Court.

“Many important issues that concern farmers and ranchers ultimately wind up being decided in the Supreme Court and we need somebody who’s going to interpret the law as Congress wrote it and not allow the agencies to run roughshod as they sometimes do over those laws,” Steen says.

NCBA environmental counsel Scott Yager says having Gorsuch on the court would be very good for cattle producers.

“He stands for objectivity and application of the law, and clarity in the law,” Yager says. “These are things that producers need to be able to understand how to comply with the law—and so not to be in fear of violating ambiguous and vague rules.”

Yager says Gorsuch is also a champion of private property rights, which is a concern to many cattle producers.
