Senate to vote on GMO labeling bill today

The Senate is expected to vote on its compromise GMO labeling bill today.

According to Politico, if the measure gets the 60 votes needed to move forward, lawmakers can limit debate to 30 hours and set up a floor vote as soon as Thursday.  The House has already passed a GMO labeling bill, which is voluntary.

Opponents of the Senate bill say it does not require labeling of most GMO foods and they are urging Senators to vote no.

While Vermont’s mandatory GMO labeling law went into effect last Friday, the state won’t begin enforcing that law until January 1, 2017 – so it is NOT too late for Congress to pre-empt the measure with a national standard.
