Midday cash livestock markets

Other than a few scattered bids that have been renewed cattle country is quiet on Thursday following yesterday’s light to moderate trade. Southern live business ranged from 121.00 to 123.00, mostly 122.00, $9.00 lower than the previous week. Northern dressed business ranged from 196.00 to 198.00, $9.00 to 10.00 lower than the previous week. More trade is expected today or tomorrow, especially in the North. Asking prices on cattle still on showlists are around 125.00 in the South, and 198.00 plus in the North.

Choice boxed beef is.95 lower at 244.47, select 217.90, down 1.00.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Hub City, South Dakota Livestock Auction totaled 2142 head on Wednesday. Compared to last week, the best test was on steers weighing 1,000 to 1,100 pounds mostly steady. Heifers were of a different weight class than last week and not well compared. There was good demand for the offering of several packages, mostly home raised cattle, and a couple of long strings of backgrounded cattle which sold on an active market. Feeder steers medium and large 1 averaging 981 pounds brought 139.15 per hundredweight. 813 pound heifers’ traded at 144.14.

Slaughter cattle receipts at the Tama, Iowa cattle auction totaled 1197 head. Choice steers and heifers were 9.75 to 10.00 lower, choice Holsteins were mostly steady. Slaughter cows were 1.00 lower. The trade was active with good demand. Choice 2-4 steers brought 124.00 to 132.00 Choice 2-4 heifers from 125.00 to 130.75. Choice 2-3 Holstein steers ranged from 110.00 to 115.00.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade are 1.05 lower, the West is down 1.09 with both at 86.15 weighted average on a carcass basis. Nationally the hog market is 1.32 lower at 85.48. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady from 78.00 to 81.00. Midwest hogs on a live basis are steady from 55.00 to 65.00.

The pork carcass cutout value is down 1.19 at 99.90 FOB plant.

For the week ending June 17, Iowa barrows and gilts averaged 277.5 pounds, 1..5 pounds lighter than the week before and 1.7 pounds smaller than 2016.
