Midday cash livestock markets

Some scattered cattle trade is being reported in Kansas at 110.00 on Friday, $5.00 lower than the majority of last week’s business. The rest of cattle country remains fairly quiet, but that is expected to change over the next several hours. A moderately active trade took place in the North yesterday at 168.00 to 170.00, 5.00 lower than last week’s weighted average basis Nebraska. They should need to move more cattle in that area today. Asking prices are around 112.00 to 114.00 in the South, and 172.00 plus In the North.

Boxed beef cutout values are higher in the morning report. Choice beef 190.25, up .77, select 171.85 up .43.

Feeder cattle receipts at Missouri auctions this week totaled 50,163 head. Compared to last week feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 lower. There were cases at various barns in which producers could find higher money if they were in the right place on the right day and their cattle just happened to fit a specific order. Overall though there was not really any specific class, weight or kind of cattle that demanded higher money across the board. Feeder steers medium and large 1 weighing 673 pounds averaged 131.34 per hundredweight. 572 pound replacement heifers averaged 139.00.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Mitchell, South Dakota Livestock Auction totaled 6611 head on Thursday Compared to last week steer calves were mostly steady to 5.00 lower with instances of 7.00 lower on 550 to 600 pounds. Yearling steers were steady to 5.00 lower, heifer calves 500 to 550 pounds 3.00 to 6.00 higher. 550- 600 pounds and 650 to 700 pounds unevenly steady, 600 to 650 pounds 1.00 to 3.00 lower. Yearling heifers narrowly compared with steady to weak undertones noted. Good demand overall for a large offering of high quality calves and yearlings. Feeder steer calves medium and large 1 weighing 622 pounds averaged 138.26 per hundredweight. 626 pound heifer calves 126.51.

St Joseph, Missouri Stockyards monthly sheep and goat auction 1558 head. Slaughter lambs unevenly steady. Market kid goats sold 40.00 to 50.00 higher. The trade was moderate and demand was good. Slaughter lambs, choice with a few prime 2-4 weighing 90 to 140 pounds brought 128.00 to 137.50 per hundredweight. Slaughter kids selection 1 weighing 40 to 60 pounds traded from 245.00 to 265.00 per hundredweight.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota and Western direct trade are both 2.07 lower at 51.76 weighted average on a carcass basis. Nationally the hog market is 1.32 lower at 52.12. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is up 1.00 at 40.00. In the Midwest hogs only Peoria open with a steady price of 27.00 on a live basis.

The pork carcass cutout value is .07 lower at 155.87 FOB plant.

Though the pork carcass value has been impressively firm through the first full week of December, weakness is expected through the end of the year. More specifically, ham prices are expected to decline the last half of the month.
