Where do artificial food colorings come from?
The Food and Drug Administration says there are two main categories of color additives they permit. The first is man-made, derived mostly from petroleum and coal sources. The FDA says manufacturers have to submit samples that the FDA tests for composition and purity. Other color additives, derived mostly from plant, animal and mineral sources, are exempt from having to be certified.
