The executive vice president of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association says there is no reason to disclose if sugar comes from GMO sugarbeets.

Luther Markwart tells Brownfield when sugarbeets are processed all of the DNA is removed.

HEALTHY LIVING PROGRAM – Should sugar be labeled GMO?

  • While processed sugar from sugarbeets will not have any DNA, there is another issue that can’t be ignored. Sugar produced from Roundup Ready sugarbeets will have measurable Roundup (glyphosate) residues when compared to organic sources of sugar. Consumers are increasing aware of this critical difference and are deliberately seeking organic sources of sugar. These consumers also know that much conventionally grown sugar cane is also contaminated with Roundup (glyphosate) since cane growers are increasingly applying preharvest applications of Roundup used as a desiccant to sugarcane.
