Late-summer heat on the Plains; largely dry weather ahead for the Heartland

During the next 5 days, very warm, mostly dry weather will prevail along and northwest of a line from Arizona to Minnesota.

In fact, dry weather will also prevail from the central Plains into the Midwest, except for a few late-week showers.  Farther east, showers and thunderstorms will sweep across the middle and northern Atlantic States later today, followed by a return of dry weather.

However, rain will linger for several days across the Deep South, with 5-day totals reaching 1 to 3 inches or more along and near the Gulf Coast, as well as the southern two-thirds of Texas.

Elsewhere, triple-digit (100-degree) temperatures will be commonly observed for the remainder of the week at lower elevations of the West, occasionally extending as far east as the northern High Plains.
