Brownfield Ag Weather Today

Snow will spread eastward across the nation’s northern tier, with the greatest accumulations (locally 6 to 12 inches or more) expected from the northern Rockies into North Dakota.  The combination of snow, wind, and low temperatures could lead to livestock stress and travel disruptions.  As cold air settles southward in the storm’s wake, late-week temperatures on the northern Plains will locally dip below 0°F.  Meanwhile, additional rainfall could total 1 to 4 inches or more from central Texas into the lower Ohio Valley.  Although most of the rain will soak into dry soils, any run-off should lead to rises in critically low river levels, especially in the Mississippi Basin.  Rain will also fall in the Corn Belt, where 1- to 2-inch totals will boost topsoil moisture but slow harvest activities.  In contrast, warm, dry weather will prevail in the Southeast.  Late in the weekend and early next week, temperatures should fall below 20°F as far south as the central High Plains, with hard freezes (28°F or below) expected to reach into northern Texas.
