During the next several days, there will be several opportunities for rainfall in the Midwest; 5-day totals could reach 1 to 3 inches in many locations. Meanwhile, tropical development remains likely over the Gulf of Mexico, as a broad area of low pressure begins to drift northward. Regardless of organization, tropical showers should reach the U.S. Gulf Coast Friday. Five-day rainfall in the southeastern U.S. could total 4 to 8 inches or more, especially from near the mouth of the Mississippi River into the southern Appalachians. However, most other areas of the country—particularly west of the Rockies—will receive little or no rainfall. In addition, scorching heat will continue across the nation’s southwestern quadrant, with limited relief expected by early next week.
