Grain Dealer’s Act moves to Michigan House floor
The Michigan House Ag Committee passed updated versions of the Grain Dealer’s Act and Farm Produce Insurance Act Wednesday.
Chairman Dan Lauwers tells Brownfield the committee raised the standards for being a valid grain dealer in Michigan and increased the indemnity fund level.
“The volume of dollars being handled by a typical grain elevator today far exceeds what was envisioned when that indemnity program was first put in place.”
Senate Bills 899 and 900, as amended, would double the insurance fund to $10 million and further protect farmers if a grain dealer declares bankruptcy.
Lauwers says the bills now moves to the House floor for passage next week and need to return to the Senate for approval before being sent to the Governor.
