Sharing a passion for horses

Tom Schlenger of Carmel, Ind. presents a registered Quarter Horse to Abby Bennett or Morgan County. The vision for Bud Alderson in 1968 was clear – to recognize deserving 4-H horse and pony members and promote the Indiana Quarter Horse Association.  Nearly 30 years later, his vision is still going strong through annual presentation of the IQHA Horse Award.

Tom Schlenger of Carmel, Indiana donated this year’s horse.  As a former 4-H’er, he got a lot out of his career and wanted to share the experience.   “I’m kind of getting out of the horse business and I thought it would be a good way to give back to 4-H – which I got so much out of,” he says.  “I decided to donate a horse that some kid can have a lot of fun with.”

16-year-old Abby Bennet of Morgan County, this year’s recipient, has always had a love for horses.  “I got my first horse when I was in 6th grade that was my own,” she says.  “I’ve shown him Western and English and actually broke him myself.  We’ve come really far and he’s helped me get into Supreme Showmanship competitions – like Round Robin at my county.  I haven’t won yet, but I’m hoping to in the near future.”
