Questions remain about how data will be used

American Farm Bureau delegates set policy Tuesday, and among the issues, one of the biggest has to do with the ownership of data collected from farms.

Illinois Farm Bureau President Rich Guebert tells Brownfield that policy from Illinois suggests protocols on data generation resulting from business relationships between farmers and their suppliers.

Burgeoning precision agriculture systems are generating a lot of data, which has led to questions about the data.

“Who owns it, what are the priorities, how is it used, how it’s interpreted, and then how can those industries use that data going down the road?” said Guebert, during an interview with Brownfield Ag News. “And then is there any value in that data and who should be a part of that value chain going forward?”

Guebert, elected in December, is among those from Illinois who are voting delegates deciding American Farm Bureau policy in San Antonio.
