Farmers face harvest delays, varying yields

Harvest is underway, but a challenging growing season has many farmers in Ohio behind schedule.

James Jacobs is a seedsman with Seed Consultants.

“The moisture is a little higher this year on the corn, we’re not seeing the dry down,” he says. “We had a cool summer and the cool weather just a couple of weeks ago delayed everything.”

He tells Brownfield there will be variability in yields this year because of nitrogen loss due to excessive rainfall earlier this year.

Farm Science Review is giving ag companies an opportunity to visit with farmers and hear their concerns as they plan for the upcoming growing season.

Jacobs says many farmers are facing tight margins.

“The price is not where we’d like to see it as far as the grain market goes, but we feel we have a lot of yield potential with our products,” he says. “We have a great price point and we feel that we can help those guys pick the hybrids that work well on their farm and with that give them a great value.”
