Dairy policy tops the list of issues important to Wisconsin Farm Bureau members

Wisconsin Farm Bureau President Jim Holte at the AFBF Annual Convention, San Antonio, Jan. 12, 2014

American Farm Bureau delegates set policy Tuesday, and among the top issues for Wisconsin delegates is American Farm Bureau’s stand on dairy policy.

Wisconsin Farm Bureau President Jim Holte tells Brownfield that dairy producers are far from unified on the issue of supply management, but he says updating is nonetheless long overdue.

Holte favors moving away from a program that has purchased product at the federal level “and move to a program that encourages marketing, innovative marketing by all processors and producers in the industry and maybe let the government play a role in which they help us manage risk; I’m saying eliminate risk, but manage risk,” said Holte, at the AFBF Annual Convention, during an interview with Brownfield Ag News.

Holte is among those from Wisconsin who are voting delegates deciding American Farm Bureau policy beginning Tuesday in San Antonio.
