Winter wheat production estimate up on month

The USDA has increased its estimate for this year’s winter wheat crop.

Production is now projected at 1.182 billion bushels, 1% above the May guess on a slightly higher average yield figure, up 0.3 bushels per acre to 48.2, with a 1% cut in hard red winter to 581.801 million bushels canceled out by a 1% gain for soft red winter to 357.953 million and 5% jump for white winter to 241.868 million bushels. Harvested area is pegged at 24.499 million acres.

That’s still 7% below a year ago on smaller acreage and yield numbers. In 2021, winter wheat totaled 1.277 billion bushels with an average yield of 50.2 bushels per acre and harvested area of 25.464 million acres. That production total included 749.489 million bushels of hard red winter, 360.689 million bushels of soft red winter, and 167.187 million bushels of white winter.

The USDA’s next production update is out July 12th.
