Wide range of March temperatures for Michigan

Michigan saw variable weather conditions during March.

The USDA says that on average, the statewide temperature and precipitation were above normal, but those temperatures fluctuated throughout the month and about 70% of the state remains at least abnormally dry, with the worst conditions in the Upper Peninsula.

Winter wheat is reportedly breaking dormancy in southeastern portions of the Thumb, with 59% of the crop called good to excellent, up 2% on the month and 16% on the year.

The maple syrup season is called average and is wrapping up in some areas due to the warmer temperatures.

Farmers are tending livestock, applying fertilizer, and testing soils ahead of spring planting.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition reports resume next Monday.
