Wheat harvest moves into southern Kansas

Wheat harvest is underway in southern Kansas.

The Kansas Wheat Commission says early reports indicate a good quality crop in that area, with exceptional test weights and average to above average yields. Protein levels are reported to be slightly below average.

A spokesman for the Mead Coop in Meade County said yields in his area are going to be above the five-year average. He described test weights as “phenomenal” with a house average of nearly 63 pounds so far.  

The latest ratings for the Kansas wheat crop are 45 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 21 percent poor to very poor.
