Weekend rains improve Wisconsin’s crops

Weekend weather brought needed rain to most of Wisconsin.  USDA reporters say only the far northern and far southern regions had below normal precipitation.  Topsoil moisture is now 66% adequate with 10% surplus, 16% short, and 8% very short with comparable subsoil moistures.

Until Friday, most of the state’s farmers were able to get in the fields most of the time.

Ninety-two percent of the state’s corn is silking and 42% is in the dough stage.  Seventy-seven percent of the crop is rated good to excellent, up two points from a week ago.

Ninety-four percent of Wisconsin’s soybeans are blooming and 73% of the crop is setting pods.  The crop is 74% good to excellent, also up two points from last week.

The potato harvest is now 14% finished, with 95% of the potatoes rated good to excellent.

Winter wheat for grain is 89% harvested, which is six days ahead of average.

Most of the state’s oats are in the bin.
