Would Walker sign a Wisconsin raw milk bill?

Another bill to legalize the sale of raw milk in Wisconsin has been introduced in the state legislature, one of the questions is: would Governor Scott Walker sign such a bill if it gets to his desk? The legislature passed a similar bill in 2010 only to have then-Governor Jim Doyle veto it.

Walker told reporters this week that if the medical community and the dairy industry dropped their opposition to the idea, he would sign the bill. However, those two groups were behind Doyle’s veto in 2010 and they remain staunch opponents to the sale of unpasteurized milk to consumers. Some are taking this as an indication Walker would not sign the bill.

The Senate bill introduced by Republican Glenn Grothman of West Bend seeks to allow farmers to sell unpasteurized milk direct to consumers on their farms. Democrat Chris Danou of Trempealeau has introduced the companion bill in the Assembly.
