Utilizing silo bags for on-farm storage

corn harvest 02The combination of a record corn crop and the lowest commodity prices farmers have seen in recent years, has farmers exploring on-farm storage options.

Purdue University professor of agricultural engineering Klein Ileleji says existing on farm units are an option but so are silo bags.

If farmers opt for the silo bags, Ileleji says it is crucial for farmers to dry the grain.  “You need to dry the grain to as low as 15 percent,” he says.  “If you’re going to sell that grain by the spring, dry it 1 percent lower.”

And, he says, it helps maintain crop quality.  “With an alternative system, like the silo bag or if you’re going to put it in a pile in a barn – most of those structures don’t have an option to aerate the grain and help control the moisture,” he says.

By drying the grain down to 15 percent moisture, farmers can store the grain on-farm for up to a year.
