USMCA could open domestic markets for Missouri dairy

Missouri Farm Bureau’s president said dairy exports to Canada will receive a boost through the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement.

Blake Hurst tells Brownfield a key part of USMCA was gaining more access to Canada’s dairy market.

“Is it going to be a huge deal? We’ll have to wait and see,” Hurst said. But it is a step in the right direction. Really one of the main sticking points of the agreement was Canada’s attempts to protect their dairy farmers.”

Hurst said if northern U.S. dairy farms increase exports to Canada, it will create a trickledown effect.

“We’ll hopefully see a little bit more export to Canada from northern [U.S.] dairy farms and if they’re shipping milk to Canada, well then Missouri farmers will have the opportunity to ship milk to markets they were going into,” he said.

Hurst said while the agreement will not impact the market overnight, it provides optimism for the future.
