USDA winter wheat estimate inches higher

The USDA has increased the 2019 winter wheat production estimate slightly from last month.

The new projection is 1.275 billion bushels, up less than 1% from May, but 8% above a year ago, with the average yield 0.2 bushels per acre higher on the month at 50.5 bushels, and harvested area at 25.214 million acres. In 2018, winter wheat totaled 1.184 billion bushels with an average yield of 47.9 bushels per acre and harvested area of 24.742 million acres.

By class, the USDA raised hard red winter by 2% from a month ago to 794.395 million bushels, but cut soft red winter by 2% to 258.302 million and lowered white winter by 1% to 221.754 million bushels. A year ago, the hard red winter crop was 662.249 million bushels with soft red winter at 285.558 million and white winter at a combined 236.132 million bushels.

The winter wheat harvest is underway, but slower than average, while the USDA’s crop condition rating is well above a year ago.

The USDA’s next set of production estimates is out July 11th.
