USDA says blockchain might be solution to disease traceability

U.S. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says new advancements in technology will allow for faster disease traceability.

“You’ve got a lot of new things out there called blockchain technology that we think will really help.”

He says it’s better for consumers to drive traceability efforts than the government, and it’s up to the industry to decide the technology that should be used.  “We just want the ability to be able to trace these animals all the way back from the consumer to that birth place.  We think we can do it without being overly oppressive on the producers.”

Blockchain technology is an information sharing platform that can track food from farm to consumers and should work for all sized operations.
