University of Nevada-Reno to close ag college

The University of Nevada-Reno is proposing to close its College of Agriculture in order to meet state-mandated budget cuts.  The college would close as July 1, 2011.

According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, the state’s Cooperative Extension Service also faces significant budget cuts.

  • Not surprising in a state that is so overwhelmingly urban. However, not only is this short-sighted, it could raise constitutional issues as the Federal government specifically gave land and money to the states to build and run colleges of agricultural and mechanical arts ie.. the Land Grant College act. If Nevada closes the college of ag can the Federal Government demand their land and/or money back??
